McCready: 10 Weekend Thoughts -- There are no rules, SEC hoops and more

NASHVILLE — I have a theory.

It's one that's just that — a theory, maybe even some sort of hypothesis — right now.

It's one I'll likely never write about beyond this brief reference. I'll likely never really flesh it out. It would be a waste of time and energy. It interests me but I doubt my audience (probably not even the larger one I have due to my successful podcast with Tyler Siskey -- McCready & Siskey, powered by Reign Total Body Fuel) would care much about.

It has to do with fan interest as it pertains to process and results in the new college athletics landscape. It's a thought that keeps coming into my mind over the last year or so.

During that time, I have covered — in person — a Southeastern Conference baseball tournament, an NCAA baseball regional, 15 college football games and college basketball games in Oxford, Palm Desert, New York, Biloxi, Tupelo, Norman and now Nashville.

I am currently covering a very likable, personable basketball team that just can't get over the hump. It's a team full of good stories, full of really nice people, led by — at least in my opinion — one of the most elite coaches in college basketball. It's my job to chronicle their season to a group of thousands of fans who should be interested.

I at least consider the idea that I am failing at my task, that I'm not doing a good enough job of detailing what's gone wrong, why breaks don't go their way, etc. But I do think there's more to it than that, probably a lot more.

I've run my theory by a few people in coaching, administration and media. So far, no one has pushed back. Instead, they've either agreed or said it's something they'll have to think more about.

Anyway, as I sit here drinking a bad cup of hotel coffee before hitting the road to head back home today, it was once again on my mind. I wish you all a wonderful week.

On to 10 Thoughts…
