Liverpool have held talks about a free transfer move for one of European football’s top defenders
Liverpool are looking to bolster their defensive options in the coming years with several of their central defenders currently poised to leave the club in the next 18 months.
Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are both out of contract in 2027, meaning the Reds need to urgently sign some top central defenders to ensure they can challenge for silverware in the coming years.
One name linked is Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes. Chelsea are firmly in the race and the French club do not want to allow him to leave until the summer. The Reds are likely to add to their defensive options in the summer.
One player they are eyeing is Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano. The Frenchman has been with the Bundesliga giants since 2021 when he made the £37m move from RB Leipzig.
However, he is out of contract this summer and despite being offered a new deal - he has not yet signed the new contract.
TEAMtalk report that talks have taken place with Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Inter Milan. All of those clubs are entitled to speak with Upamecano as he is out of contract this summer.
Liverpool and their rival clubs have outlined ‘prospective terms’ to Upamecano, who the Reds could snap up on a free transfer. They missed out on Marc Guehi after he moved to Manchester City.
Bayern are hopeful a new deal can be agreed but “there is genuine concern inside the club about the level of interest being shown”.
The Reds can agree a pre-contract with Upamecano to try and secure his signature before the summer. With Guehi playing in the same league, they weren’t able to do the same thing with the England international.
Upamecano knows Konate well with the pair having played together regularly for France.
