Liverpool in late "negotiations" to sign "powerful" star who could be their new Fabinho -…

The summer transfer window was one of the most remarkable we've seen at Anfield as Liverpool spent a shedload on bolstering Arne Slot's squad.

Having just won the league, this was the time to capitalise and they more than did that when they secured some elite-level names in the form of Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike.

Liverpool's Florian Wirtz

On paper, the Reds had won the transfer window, but it's been anything but plain sailing for a number of their new additions.

That said, Hugo Ekitike and, in particular, Florian Wirtz have come alive of late. Wirtz is finally looking like a £100m plus player. He has scored six goals and registered two assists in his last ten matches for Liverpool.

Because of how much they spent, the winter window has been a quieter affair, but there could be some late action.

Liverpool pursuing last minute transfer at Anfield

Liverpool's forward line is beginning to purr again but they need defensive reinforcements. They will have been frustrated to miss out on Marc Guehi to Manchester City but have been tracking Rennes' young French defender, Jeremy Jaquet as a potential alternative.

After Conor Bradley suffered a long-term injury, the transfer chiefs at Anfield have also been looking at signing a new full-back. Well, with their latest target, they could kill two birds with one stone.

Indeed, according to reports from a number of sources, they have cast their eyes in the direction of Dutch defender Lutsharel Geertruida.

Fabrizio Romano has claimed that 'club to club negotations' are underway, but according to The Athletic's David Ornstein, it's not an easy deal to complete.

RB Leipzig's Lutsharel Geertruida in action

Geertruida is currently on loan at Sunderland from German outfit RB Leipzig and for any move to be sealed, it would require the Bundesliga side to break that deal. However, the Black Cats are keen to ensure they have a replacement in the building before he leaves.

Ornstein has claimed there is a 75% chance of a deal getting done before Monday's deadline at 7pm.

Why Geertruida could be Liverpool's new Fabinho

Liverpool need a defender, make no mistake about it. They needed a defender back in the summer too.

It looked like Guehi was all set to move to Anfield, he'd said his goodbyes to Crystal Palace and a move had been agreed. However, when the Eagles couldn't secure a replacement, the plug was pulled.

Six months later, much to the shock of those at Anfield, he's now a City player. Between that, Liverpool have struggled at the back.

Arne Slot said earlier this season that Ibrahima Konate has been at the "crime scene" too much this term, referring to his mistakes, and even though his form has improved, overall, the Reds are nowhere near the level they found themselves at in 2024/25.

The centre of the defence is not the only issue and that's where Geertruida comes in.

So far this campaign, the 25-year-old has played in a number of positions, featuring at centre-back on six occasions, meaning he could cover for Konate. He could also replace Bradley at right-back, playing in that role twice throughout 2025/26 and 163 times during his senior career.

Yet, the Netherlands international is also a capable defensive midfielder, playing for Sunderland four times in that position.

Liverpool have a number of versatile players in their ranks right now. Player of the Season Dominik Szoboszlai has played in midfield and at right-back but it's perhaps Fabinho who Geertruida is most alike, certainly positionally.

When the Brazilian signed for the club back in 2018, he did so as a defensive midfielder. However, during the earlier stages of his playing career, Fabinho had regularly played in defence, much like Geertruida.

Indeed, the former Liverpool star played 29 times at right-back during the 2015/16 campaign when he was at Monaco. He dazzled from that role too, scoring six goals and supplying four assists. As it happens, the combative midfielder has also played 37 times as a centre-back in his career, demonstrating phenomenal versatility.

There are a number of shared attributes here too. Fabinho was a dogged and determined player and Geertruida is cut from a similar cloth. As scout Antonio Mango put it, he's a "powerful" ball handler while he also "oozes class on the ball," much like Fabinho.

Geetruida-Sunderland

Liverpool have arguably been looking for a player to replace the Brazil international for a while now and even though Geertruida would be a left-field approach to doing so, it would be a smart pick-up.

That said, don't expect to see him in midfield much. This is a signing with the defence very much in mind.
