Sunderland have admitted they won’t stand in the way of the defender if he wishes to switch to Liverpool.

Netherlands defender Lutsharel Geertruida is on the verge of becoming Liverpool’s newest recruit as Arne Slot pushed to close a deal for the player.

Despite spending a record amount of money last summer, Liverpool have found themselves becoming increasingly light in the defensive department as injuries to Giovanni Leoni, Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong have led them to dive into the January transfer market.

Geertruida appears to be the chosen one and his ability to play across the backline is perfect for Liverpool’ current situation.

Not only that, but he has also played under Arne Slot for three years before at Feyenoord, so he knows the manager and his style of play well.

Sunderland have enjoyed Geertruida so far this season, as the defender has impressed across 17 appearances for the Black Cats this season.

They have agreed not to stand in his way but will seek to find a replacement and a compensation fee from Liverpool before any departure for Geertruida can take place.

DaveOCKOP can exclusively reveal that Sunderland are demanding a compensation package of £3m-£4m.

We can also reveal that Jurgen Klopp is playing a role in this move.

Negotiations are still ongoing, but this is a move that makes sense for all parties, and an agreement for all clubs isn’t far away.
