Liverpool cruised to a 4-1 win over Newcastle United on Saturday, boosting their hopes of a top four finish in the Premier League.
After former Everton man Anthony Gordon had put the Magpies ahead at Anfield, a quickfire double from Hugo Ekitike turned the game on its head and put the hosts in front.
Florian Wirtz then added a third for Arne Slot’s side, before defender Ibrahima Konate added a fourth and completed the rout for the reigning champions.
That result moved Liverpool up to fifth in the top flight standings, although they could drop back down to sixth depending on certain results on Sunday.
In the meantime, it appears that Liverpool are one of two Premier League giants working to agree a deal for a defender from the French top flight.
According to Fabrizio Romano, both Liverpool and rivals Chelsea are interested in Rennes centre-back Jeremy Jacquet.
He claims that the two English sides are both working on deals to sign the 20-year-old, although the player would only move this summer as Rennes are insisting that he remains with them for the remainder of the current campaign.

Jacquet is a product of Rennes’ youth system and has previously spent time on loan at fellow French side Clermont Foot.
In total he has now made more than 30 appearances for his current club across all competitions, and he is quickly building a reputation as one of the most talented young central defenders in Europe.
Romano claims that both Chelsea and Liverpool remain in talks about possible moves for the defender, however he also claims that a move to Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich now appears unlikely.
Jacquet’s current contract with Rennes is set to run until the end of the 2028/29 season, but it appears increasingly likely that he will instead depart the club this summer.
