Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp could have the final say in the decision over the Reds’ pursuit of RB Leipzig defender Lutsharel Geertruida. Liverpool are in talks over taking over the player’s loan deal with Sunderland before deadline day.
The 25-year-old has been on loan with the Black Cats for the first half of the season, meaning that an agreement over any deal will have to be reached with both Sunderland and RB Leipzig. The Reds are keen to add to their defensive options before Monday’s deadline.
It is understood that Sunderland will only be willing to let the player leave once they have secured a replacement. It could therefore be a race against time for both clubs.
Should the Black Cats be able to sort a replacement, it could then come down to Liverpool getting the green light from Leipzig. That’s where Klopp could be involved.
The German is Red Bull’s Head of global soccer, a role he has been in since the start of 2025. Speaking back in the summer, Klopp hinted that he has more power at the Red Bull clubs, including Leipzig, than some may have thought.
When asked about his role, he said: I don’t know if I need to explain this a thousand more times – I’m not the shadow boss here.
“I’m just trying to contribute my experience – and I really do have quite a lot of that.”

Before taking his role with the Red Bull group, Klopp spent nine years as manager of Liverpool. During that time he led the club to one Premier League title, one Champions League, one FA Cup and two League Cup victories.
Following Saturday’s 4-1 win over Newcastle, current Liverpool boss Arne Slot admitted that the club are keen to strengthen the squad ahead of the deadline. “I think there’s always a lot of talk about Liverpool and Liverpool players,” he said.
“There was a lot of noise around the club the last week or should I say weeks, but today our fans showed what noise really means. That is being loud, they were so helpful today, that is what noise here is in Liverpool.
“We are trying to strengthen the squad and not trying to weaken it. But yeah, 48-72 hours to go, let us see where the window ends up.”
