Liverpool have a player similar to World Cup-winning star who played with Ronaldo, says Arne Slot

Arne Slot will have eased some of the pressure on himself following Liverpool’s win over Newcastle United.

Steven Gerrard commented on the issues facing Slot at Anfield earlier this week, but things are looking up for the Dutchman.

The Reds beat Qarabag in the Champions League, but rather than reverting to type in the Premier League, Liverpool beat Newcastle United 4-1.

It was a brilliant showing all round, with three players in particular standing out against Newcastle.

Florian Wirtz, who can’t stop scoring at Anfield, was of course one, with Ibrahima Konate and Hugo Ekitike the others.

Arne Slot compares Hugo Ekitike to Romario

Ekitike now has 15 goals in all competitions since signing from Eintracht Frankfurt over the summer.

There is an ‘arrogance’ to the Liverpool centre-forward, but that is by no means a bad thing.

Eddie Howe even highlighted Ekitike post-match, and Slot has also done the same.

Speaking about Wirtz’s partnership with the Frenchman, Slot suggested that his second goal was similar to strikes Brazilian icon Romario, who won the 1994 World Cup alongside Ronaldo, used to score all the time.

As per the BBC, he said: “Their combination [Wirtz and Ekitike] gets better and better and better.

His [Ekitike’s] second goal, I don’t know if he knows who he is but Romario who played in Holland and Brazil scored a lot of goals like this. It looked like a Romario goal I have to say.”

We know who played well, but did any Liverpool player concern you against Newcastle?

Arne Slot explains how Hugo Ekitike has improved

Ekitike has arguably been the Reds’ most consistent summer signing.

However, Slot has still noted how the forward has improved since he arrived on Merseyside.

He added: “Hugo is another player who is adjusted to the Premier League. He is much fitter.

“From the start of the season he was special on the ball but off the ball he has improved so much, and that is what you get playing lots of games in the Champions League and Premier League.”

With around four months of the campaign left to play, Ekitke still has time to improve further and match Fernando Torres for most goals scored by a Liverpool striker in their debut season (33).
