Liverpool have now reportedly set their sights on an alternative option to Lutsharel Geertruida in the event that they fail to sign the RB Leipzig defender.
Liverpool pushing to sign Geertruida
A perfect weekend for Liverpool could be about to get even better following their 4-1 thumping of Newcastle United.
Arne Slot finally showed some of his cards after full-time, revealing that those at Anfield are trying to strengthen his squad in the final stages of the transfer window following recent injuries to Joe Gomez and Jeremie Frimpong.
Slot said: "I think we are trying to strengthen the squad and not trying to weaken it. But yeah, 48 hours to go. Let’s see where the window ends up."
Just 24 hours after the Dutchman's admission, reports are suggesting that he could be about to get a reunion with former Feyenoord defender Geertruida.
It's not an easy deal this late in the window, however. Before Liverpool can agree anything, RB Leipzig must reach an agreement to terminate the defender's loan deal and then that's when the Reds can potentially secure their signing.
A move to sign Geertruida certainly makes sense on paper. He can provide cover at centre-back and at right-back - two of Liverpool's biggest problem areas this season.

Liverpool have made a late move in the winter transfer target.
Slot also knows him well from his time at Feyenoord and is in desperate need of a player with such versatility amid his side's current injury problems.
There is room for cautious optimism that Liverpool will have a solution to their squad problems before the deadline and even if it's not Geertruida, the Reds have reportedly got some alternatives in mind.
Liverpool eyeing Roland Sallai move
As reported by Sacha Tavolieri, Liverpool are eyeing a move to sign Roland Sallai just in case they miss out on Geertruida ahead of Monday's deadline. The Hungarian is represented by the same agent as Curtis Jones and has already played with Dominik Szoboszlai and Milos Kerkez at international level.
The 28-year-old right-back could be one to watch if Liverpool make their move. It was earlier this season that the Reds got the chance to see his quality first-hand, when he emerged from the bench to get Galatasaray over the line in a shock victory.

Like Geertruida, though, it would need to be a deal that moves rapidly ahead of the deadline. Those at Anfield are clearly looking to solve their biggest depth problem, but they are also running out of time to do so.
