Liverpool only have a few gaps to fill in the starting XI, but this is how it could look if Arne Slot gets his wish.
January, as it usually is, has been considerably quieter despite Arne Slot needing reinforcements at centre-half and in wide areas. With the transfer window set to slam shut at 7.00pm (GMT) on Monday the 2nd of February, Richard Hughes will need to move fast if he is to get any new faces through the door.
Arne Slot gives Liverpool transfer update
Slot, as part of the pre-match preparations for the Premier League clash against earlier this month Fulham, was asked about any potential new arrivals and he didn’t give much away, via Liverpool’s media team: “I think you know the answer: the answer is if we think we've addressed a player that can help us and we think it's possible, then we would do so. But those are conversations that take place not far away from here, by the way, but not in this room.”
If Slot gets the players who have been linked with a move to Anfield through the door, his starting XI for Liverpool could look a little bit different with a couple of key additions, especially in defence. The Reds have been linked with a move for Denzel Dumfries of Inter Milan in the sort of swoop that would fix the troublesome right-back position.
How Liverpool could look in attack
The midfield is more settled with Liverpool looking to tie down players like Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch to new contracts, whilst Curtis Jones has had a move to Inter Milan blocked. Adam Wharton could be a £60m summer target but, for now, the status quo remains for the engine room.
It is the most stable area of Liverpool’s squad with Slot being able to trust all of the players who he has at his disposal. If he is missing anything though, it is a natural no.6 who can either be an enforcer or dictate play from a deeper position. A Sandro Tonali, Elliot Anderson or Wharton makes a lot of sense.
In the forward line, speculation has been quiet given the money that was spent in the summer. Slot will be hoping that Alexander Isak returns to full training and looks like the proverbial new signing, but there is one name that has been doing the rounds. Liverpool are at the front of the queue for RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande and they could shock the Premier League again if they move now instead of waiting until the inevitable summer transfer battle for the £87m rated flyer.
Should Hughes break the bank again for Diomande, Liverpool’s starting XI could well look something like this when everyone is fully fit: Alisson, Dumfries, Kerkez, Van Dijk, Schlotterbeck, Gravenberch, Szoboszlai, Mac Allister, Wirtz, Isak, Diomande.
