Exactly nine years ago, the Blues, who were then being managed by Antonio Conte, came very close to beating the same team at Anfield.
Had they, supporters would have had a Chelsea legend to thank.

David Luiz scored stunning free-kick against Liverpool nine years ago
On 1 February 2017, Chelsea travelled to Anfield to face Liverpool, looking to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table. Because of David Luiz, they managed to do that.
In just the 24th minute, the central defender scored a very clever free-kick after catching Simon Mignolet off guard.
The way Luiz hit it and the distance from which it was taken from, it is definitely fair to say that it was one of the best goals Chelsea have scored at Anfield.

Georginio Wijnaldum eventually equalised, while Diego Costa missed a penalty, meaning that Chelsea could only increase their lead at the top of the table by one point. Not earning all three on the night did not matter in the end, though.
Conte’s men went on to win the title by seven points. They finished on 93, while London rivals Tottenham Hotspur’s final total was 86.
Unfortunately, for Chelsea and Luiz, they could not build on that incredible campaign the following season.

David Luiz’s fallout with Antonio Conte
Had it not been for their FA Cup win, the 2017/18 season would have been a complete disaster for Chelsea. The Blues relinquished their title to Manchester City, failed to qualify for the Champions League and lost their manager after bust-ups with players, including Luiz.
Conte was sacked by Chelsea but not before completely falling out with Luiz and Diego Costa.
Costa was sold to Atletico Madrid, with his relationship with Conte actually breaking down before the 2017/18 campaign even started, but Luiz remained at Stamford Bridge and was eventually dropped after questioning his manager’s tactics.
“He has to work really hard otherwise he is on the bench or in the stand,” Conte warned the Brazilian (via Sky Sports).
The damage was already done, however, and Luiz barely played under the current Napoli boss from that moment on.
