Liverpool had looked to be quiet on transfer deadline day, but has Arne Slot suggested that Richard Hughes could be busy?
Liverpool looked much more like defending Premier League champions against tricky opposition as Arne Slot looks to close the gap on those at the top of the table.
The Reds boss cut a contented figure after seeing his side rally from 1-0 down to dispatch Newcastle United as comfortably as they have any team all season with thoughts immediately turning to the transfer window closing and the prospect of new faces arriving at Anfield.
Richard Hughes is leaving it late, however, there has been new on one potential addition in a much-needed position.
Liverpool close in on right-back deal
“Understand that Lutsharel Geertruida and Liverpool have already reached a full agreement. RB Leipzig (contract until 2029) are set to give the green light. As revealed exclusively, the search for a new right-back at Liverpool have been ongoing for weeks - now Geertruida is set to be the chosen one. Liverpool and Sunderland are in direct contact.”
Liverpool have struggled to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold in terms of both quality and consistency. There would be no complaints if Conor Bradley was able to start every game or Jeremie Frimpong, but neither young full-back can stay fit to consolidate the position.
Calvin Ramsay clearly isn’t going to be trusted by the manager either. Geertruida’s situation is complicated, but he has shown that he can cope with the demands of the Premier League and contribute at both ends of the park.
What did Arne Slot say about late Liverpool deals?
Slot, speaking after the win over Newcastle, spoke about potential late moves: “I think there’s always a lot of talks about Liverpool and a lot of talks about Liverpool players. There was a lot of noise around the club the last week, [or] maybe I should say weeks. I think our fans showed today what noise really means – that’s being loud, because they were so helpful today.
“So that is what noise here is in Liverpool. I think we are trying to strengthen the squad and not trying to weaken it. Forty-eight hours, I don’t know how long to go, but let’s see when the window ends.”
Centre-half is still an area of concern and another winger also wouldn’t go a miss, although Mohamed Salah looks more settled and Florian Wirtz is now adding the sort of numbers that his performances suggested that he was capable of. Several big names have been linked, but it looks as though the cheque-book is going to be kept mainly for the summer.
