Liverpool’s recruitment team is tracking the talented centre-back in France, Jeremy Jacquet, who has moved quickly from academy football to becoming a starter at senior level.
The defender stands at 1.88m, plays at centre-half, and has already built a solid senior résumé despite his age.
His record shows steady progression. He featured regularly for a reserve side before stepping into first-team football, then went out on loan to gain minutes and learn the demands of weekly matches.
Across his senior career, he has logged 83 club appearances and five goals, including a loan spell where he contributed two league goals.
For his parent club, he has now piled up close to 30 senior appearances, with his latest season showing he is trusted in big games.
The international pathway is there too.
He has represented his country at multiple youth levels and has already reached the under-21 setup.
That profile explains why the market has shifted around him this winter. Young centre-backs with size, calmness, and minutes are rare. When one becomes available, the queue forms fast.
For Liverpool, this is the kind of deal that can shape a back line for years, but only if the club moves ahead of the noise and gets in early.
According to Footmercato, Liverpool are now reported to be in pole position to sign Jeremy Jacquet of Stade Rennais FC.
The report read, “According to our information, Liverpool have now entered the race for Jacquet.”
“We can confirm that the Reds have quickly become serious competitors for Chelsea, who are already in advanced negotiations.”
“The English club are reportedly looking to strengthen their defense with a young and promising player, capable of integrating immediately into Arne Slot’s team, while also preparing for the future.”
“This announcement changes the game and puts Rennes in a strategic position, able to capitalize on the growing interest to maximize the transfer fee.”
“Furthermore, according to our sources, Liverpool, currently in pole position, are not expected to be content with simply monitoring the situation and are planning a significant and swift offensive to secure the transfer before Chelsea.”
“With substantial financial resources and the prospect of offering Jacquet a major role, the Reds seem determined not to let this opportunity slip away.”
“Should the Anfield club make an attractive offer, Rennes could then be forced to choose between maintaining the stability of their current squad and the financial opportunity to make the biggest sale in their history.”
“The final hours of the transfer window are therefore crucial for Jacquet, whose future could change drastically tomorrow evening.”
Chelsea FC had already been in front, with an offer of at least €50m, and the player had reportedly agreed terms there.
Rennes, though, are not keen to sell unless the numbers rise toward €70m, which would beat Jeremy Doku’s €60m move to Manchester City FC.
His importance was spelled out by Habib Beye, who said, “Today, Jérémy is a very important player for our objectives, and if we were to let him go, we would have to lower our expectations.”
“But for me, it’s a non-issue right now.”
And the chase is far from settled.
Fabrizio Romano, also, reported that the battle for Jacquet remains ongoing, with Liverpool and Chelsea both in talks with Rennes and the player’s camp.
FC Bayern Munich are described as unlikely, while Rennes want Jacquet to stay put for now — meaning any move would only happen in July 2026.
Romano added that Liverpool have been in the race for around 20 days, not just recently, while Chelsea have also been negotiating for weeks.
Liverpool’s interest changes the balance.
With Arne Slot looking to strengthen with youth that can also contribute now, the Reds are expected to push hard before the window shuts.

🚨🇫🇷 The battle for Jeremy Jacquet remains very much ongoing at this stage.
Understand Liverpool and Chelsea are both in talks with Rennes and player’s camp for the defender. Bayern unlikely.
Jacquet would only join in July 2026, as Rennes want.
