Liverpool were in talks on Sunday to try and reach an agreement for Lutsharel Geertruida, who is currently on loan at Sunderland

Liverpool’s move for Lutsharel Geertruida is ‘not expected to happen now’ with Sunderland unable to sanction a deal this late in the transfer window.

Sunderland were keen to get a replacement in before agreeing to cancel the player’s loan, which in turn would have allowed Liverpool and RB Leipzig to reach a new loan agreement.

The power lay, and still lies, with Sunderland. There is no break clause in Geertruida’s loan deal and now Paul Joyce of The Times has revealed the move is unlikely to happen.

He said on X: “Liverpool - Geertruida deal not expected to happen now. Sunderland not in a position to sanction it at present. Player wanted to move and Liverpool were ready to proceed.”

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has also reported the deal is likely off.

He said on X: “Lutsharel Geertruida-Liverpool deal considered OFF by Sunderland after talks not advancing today. Discussions took place over last 24h but no agreement at this stage and SAFC not planning to proceed.”

Geertruida was Arne Slot’s captain at Feyenoord previously and was an ideal short-term signing due to his versatility. He can operate at right-back, centre-back and defensive midfield. They are areas Liverpool are all short in but the Reds must now look elsewhere.

Currently, the Reds have few options at right-back with Conor Bradley out for the season due to an ACL injury and Jeremie Frimpong facing a number of weeks out after sustaining an injury early on in the win over Qarabag.
