The franchise player of the Toronto Raptors was rewarded for his standout play, and his team’s unexpected rise up the Eastern Conference standings with a second all-star reserve selection in his five NBA seasons.

Barnes, who has a case for a third team All-NBA selection and should be a no-doubt all-defensive first-team choice should his season continue this way, previously made the all-star game two years ago.

Barnes, who was averaging 19.4 points, 8.3 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 1.5 blocks and 1.3 steals while shooting a career-best 50.1% from the field and 82.5% from the free throw line, also leads all NBA players in stocks (steals + blocks).

He’s now the sixth Raptor to earn multiple all-star selections while with the team, joining Vince Carter, Chris Bosh, Kyle Lowry, DeMar DeRozan and Pascal Siakam. In the last six seasons, only Barnes and Siakam (twice each) and Fred VanVleet (once) have made the cut for Toronto.

The Raptors have not had a player voted in since Siakam in 2019-20, which ended a run of at least six straight years where a Raptor had been a starter.

Toronto had been hoping that leading scorer Brandon Ingram, who made one all-star appearance earlier in his career, would also get the call, but that did not happen.

“I expect to have at least two all-stars announced tonight,” Raptors head coach Darko Rajakovic had said before the Raptors hosted the Utah Jazz.

“We’re really excited about that. I think what our team accomplished so far in the second year of a rebuild, the way Scottie is playing this season, the way BI is playing this season, I think those two guys deserve consideration, nomination and to be announced as all-stars tonight.”

Ingram denied

Rajakovic will have to take it up with his fellow Eastern Conference head coaches, who went with Barnes, but not Ingram.

Toronto entered Sunday fourth in the conference standings and with a win over the Jazz would match last season’s win total of 30.

The league had previously announced Jaylen Brown, Jalen Brunson, Tyrese Maxey, Cade Cunningham and Giannis Antetokounmpo as the East’s starters (Antetokounmpo is injured and will likely be replaced) and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Steph Curry, Luka Doncic, Victor Wembanyama and Nikola Jokic as the West’s starters.

This year three teams will be made out of the all-star choices, including one comprised of world players.

MVP joins list

Reigning NBA MVP Gilgeous-Alexander, of Hamilton, will be joined by fellow Canadian Jamal Murray, the star Denver Nuggets shooting guard who had been regarded as the best active veteran never to make an all-star game until being named a reserve Sunday.

Other first-time all-stars were Atlanta’s Jalen Johnson, and ex-Raptor Norman Powell, of Miami and Detroit’s Jalen Duren.

Other East reserve selections were Indiana’s Siakam, New York’s Karl-Anthony Towns and Cleveland’s Donovan Mitchell.

Besides Murray, the West’s reserves included legends LeBron James, of the Los Angeles Lakers and Houston’s Kevin Durant, along with Minnesota’s Anthony Edwards, Phoenix’s Devin Booker and first-timers Chet Holmgren, of Oklahoma City and Deni Avdija, of Portland.

The teams will be chosen on Tuesday.

The biggest snubs were arguably Clippers stars Kawhi Leonard and James Harden and Houston centre Alperen Sengun, all in the West, with Brooklyn’s Michael Porter Jr. and Ingram notable non-selections in the East.
