Liverpool have reportedly agreed a deal to sign Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes, beating Chelsea to the player's signature

Liverpool have won the race to sign in-demand defender Jeremy Jacquet after agreeing a deal with Rennes late on Sunday night.

Chelsea had been strongly pursuing the centre-back too while Bayern Munich were also interested but dropped out of the race in recent days as they were unable to match the financial power of the Premier League clubs.

Fabrizio Romano provided the update in recent hours, with Liverpool agreeing a total deal worth £61m. However, the player will not join Liverpool until the end of the season with Rennes manager Habib Beye insistent the player does not depart the French outfit during the middle of the campaign.

Giving an update on X, Romano said: “Jeremy Jacquet to Liverpool, here we go! Deal agreed now for June 2026, as revealed. Understand fee is €60m plus €10m add-ons to Rennes. Jeremy has agreed personal terms with LFC. Agreement done for summer 2026 for one of the most talented CBs in the world.”

Jacquet made his professional debut for Rennes in January 2024 but spent last season on loan at Ligue 2 side Clermont Foot. This campaign he has become a key player for Rennes, and has played in 18 Ligue 1 games for the club and has started in 90 per cent of matches.

The deal could prove to be a hugely-significant one for Liverpool who need to add more long-term options at centre-back.

Ibrahima Konate is out of contract this summer while both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez just have 18 months left on their respective deals at the club. Giovanni Leoni is the only long-term option, outside the of the club’s academy players, but he is currently out for the season with an ACL injury.
