Chelsea have missed out on a deal for Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet after he agreed to join Premier League rivals Liverpool
Talks have been ongoing between Chelsea and Rennes for a number of weeks now with the Blues keen to sign Jacquet this month. The French club have always been unwilling to let him leave halfway through the season.
Bayern Munich were also linked but Fabrizio Romano provided the update in recent hours, with Liverpool agreeing a total deal worth £61m. He will not make the move to Anfield until the summer, however.
Giving an update on X, Romano said: “Jeremy Jacquet to Liverpool, here we go! Deal agreed now for June 2026, as revealed. Understand fee is €60m plus €10m add-ons to Rennes. Jeremy has agreed personal terms with LFC. Agreement done for summer 2026 for one of the most talented CBs in the world.”
Jacquet made his professional debut for Rennes in January 2024 but spent last season on loan at Ligue 2 side Clermont Foot. This campaign he has become a key player for Rennes, and has played in 18 Ligue 1 games for the club and has started in 90 per cent of matches.
Sky Sports News reports that Chelsea offered the exact same deal as Liverpool for Jacquet but the return of Mamadou Sarr from loan and with Josh Acheampong staying at Stamford Bridge, the player changed his mind and opted for a move to Liverpool. He will undergo a medical with the Reds on Tuesday.
A route to regular football is more likely at Anfield as Chelsea have a number of young defenders in their ranks. The Blues will now need to look elsewhere if they want to bolster their defensive options before the 7pm deadline.
