Liverpool look set to complete the signing of highly-rated Rennes centre-back Jeremy Jacquet, with reliable journalist David Ornstein now dropping a new update.
On Sunday, an exciting Reds transfer update emerged, with many reports suggesting that they had agreed a deal to sign Jacquet in the summer window.
While some Liverpool fans would clearly love to see the 20-year-old arrive right now, in order to aid Arne Slot’s lack of centre-back depth, it is still a hugely exciting piece of business.
Now, writing on X, The Athletic‘s Ornstein has claimed that Jacquet will fly to Liverpool on Monday to undergo a medical and complete his move to the club:
“Jeremy Jacquet flying to North West this morning for medical today as all parties work to complete summer move from Rennes to Liverpool. 20yo Stade Rennais defender joining LFC on contract until June 2031 + 1 after clubs agreed £60m deal.
Can Jacquet be the future of Liverpool’s defence?
A new central defender was paramount for Liverpool this year, and incredibly, Jacquet will become the first non-teenage centre-back signing they have made since Ibrahima Konate back in 2021.
The Frenchman looks like such an exciting prospect, already becoming a key figure for Rennes at such a young age, with journalist Bence Bocsak lauding his brilliance:
“I think it speaks volumes that Jeremy Jacquet captained France at U16, U18, U19 and U20 level. As well as a fantastic player, Liverpool are also getting a great character with leadership skills.
“He hasn’t worn the armband at Rennes but you can see his leadership qualities on the pitch. He’s always dictating and commanding his teammates – something that stood out to me right away. Don’t see this often with a 20-year-old centre-back.”
Jacquet has called Virgil van Dik and Konate two of his idols in the past, which may have played a big role in his decision to pick Liverpool, and he will hope to play alongside them for as long as possible, eventually becoming the new leader of the defence with Giovanni Leoni.
Doubts continue to persist over Konate’s future, however, and if he doesn’t end up signing a contract extension at Anfield, at least one more centre-back will be needed in the summer.
