'At the moment': Fabrizio Romano shares whether Liverpool fans can expect another new signing today

Liverpool supporters have woken up to some good news on transfer deadline day after the club agreed a deal to sign French defender Jeremy Jacquet.

After sitting tight throughout January, the Reds have sprung into action in February as they attempt to bolster their defence.

Unfortunately, Jacquet will not arrive until the summer transfer window, meaning Liverpool‘s need for more immediate additions is still yet to be met.

A move for Lutsharel Geertruida fell through on Sunday, leaving the Reds still without a recognised right-back until Jeremie Frimpong returns.

The attempt to sign Geertruida at least showed that Liverpool are trying to address the problem at right-back and has given fans hope that something could still be done on Monday’s transfer deadline day. Addressing these wishes, journalist Fabrizio Romano has shared whether Liverpool will try for an alternative to Geertruida.

Liverpool ready to make last-ditch signing

Geertruida would not have been a perfect signing for Liverpool, but he would have at least plugged a hole that really does need filling. Jacquet will too, but not until the summer.

More immediately, Romano says that there is nothing really active for the Reds but that if an opportunity arises they will be ready to take it.

“Is there a chance Liverpool sign someone for now and not just talking about the summer?” he said on his YouTube channel. “At the moment Liverpool’s position is very clear, they believe that signing a player like Jeremy Jacquet for the future is something special.

“Liverpool now feel very good, they are not desperate to add a defender. There is some sort of emergency because of the injuries at right-back, but at the moment it is not something really imminent. Inter closed the door for Dumfries, Geertruida deal with Sunderland and Leipzig is not happening so at the moment Liverpool are not desperate. They are ready to stay with this squad.

“If there is a final minutes opportunity, Liverpool could do that. Otherwise, they already started thinking for next season.”

Who is even out there for Liverpool?

When news emerged that Liverpool were trying to sign Geertruida on Sunday supporters had mixed feelings.

Nevertheless, the 25-year-old was probably the best option they could hope for as a short-term fix for their right-back worries.

That goes to show that although fans do want something to happen in the market on Monday, it really is slim pickings for the club.

Galatasaray’s Rolland Sallai has been mentioned as an alternative to Geertruida and it remains to be seen whether Liverpool pivot towards the Hungarian.

But Sallai and Dumfries aside, there are no whisperings of who a potential last-minute addition could be. That does not bode well for those hoping for a late arrival.
