Liverpool have been trying to sign Sunderland loanee Lutsharel Geertruida.
Jeremy Jacquet is likely to be Liverpool’s only signing before the January transfer window closes.
Arne Slot’s side are short of defensive options for the remainder of the 2025-26 campaign. Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni (both knee) are ruled out for the remainder of the season, while Jeremie Frimpong is sidelined with a groin issue.
Liverpool have tried to sign Lutsharel Geertruida on loan. The Netherlands international, who was Arne Slot’s captain at Feyenoord, is currently on loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig. The complexity means that the Reds have been unable reach an agreement with the other two parties. Leipzig had no recall option and Sunderland required a replacement before sanctioning an exit, while Liverpool would have required to pay a compensation fee to their Premier League rivals.
Meanwhile, Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries has also been linked with a move to Anfield. But unless a good opportunity arises, Liverpool head coach Slot will be working with the same group of players until the summer.
Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano said on YouTube: “Liverpool believe signing a player like Jeremy Jacquet for the future is something special. Liverpool started behind in this race weeks ago but kept trying and trying and trying. Is there a chance for Manchester United to hijack? No.
“Liverpool remain in control and are very happy with the signing. Bayern [Munich] had a meeting to try to sign Jeremy Jacquet. Liverpool feel very good. At the moment, they are not desperate to sign another defender unless there is some sort of emergency because of the injuries at right-back or Liverpool find a good opportunity in the final hours of the window. But at the moment, it's not something they need.
“Inter closes the door for Dumfries, the Geertruida deal with Sunderland and Leipzig is not happening. Liverpool are not desperate, if there's a final-minute opportunity, Liverpool could do that.”
Liverpool will not sanction any departures from their current squad given the injury problems, with striker Alexander Isak sidelined for the long term with a broken leg. Well-regarded youngsters Jayden Danns and Stefan Bajcetic (both hamstring) remain unavailable.
Curtis Jones has attracted interest from Inter Milan but he will remain. Andy Robertson has been wanted by Tottenham Hotspur but Liverpool are reluctant to allow their vice-captain to depart. Meanwhile, Federico Chiesa was linked with a return to Juventus.
