Liverpool can complete Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz partnership with 'phenomenal' £86m swoop - opinion

Possibly the best thing about watching Liverpool this season has been the ever-growing understanding between Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike.

Amid some desperately bad displays from the Reds, the pair of summer arrivals have been linking up to devastating effect.

They were at it again on Saturday night against Newcastle when Wirtz teed up Ekitike to equalise for Liverpool out of the blue. It was the latest example of a pairing which looks set to become one of the best in the Premier League.

Having been signed for almost £200m combined last summer, Wirtz and Ekitike are clearly going to be central to Liverpool’s tactical plan moving forward. The third cog to that wheel should be Alexander Isak who hopefully can get on their wavelength when he returns from injury.

However, if Liverpool want to truly take their attacking link-up play to another level, they should be knocking Atletico Madrid’s door down to get Julian Alvarez to Anfield.

Julian Alvarez could still be ideal for Liverpool

According to ESPN, Alvarez could be available for around £86m during the coming summer transfer window. The Argentine is reportedly keen to leave Atletico and a move to Arsenal or Barcelona is being mooted.

But as former Liverpool midfielder Don Hutchison outlined on Sunday’s ESPN FC, Alvarez could still be exactly what the Reds need to complete their forward line.

Asked if Liverpool should look to sell Isak at the end of the season, Hutchison suggested that Alvarez would have been a better fit with Wirtz and Ekitike.

“I did say when Liverpool signed them both [Isak and Ekitike], I would have pulled out of the Isak deal and put all my money in and broke the British transfer record for Julian Alvarez,” he said. “I think an Alvarez and Ekitike with Wirtz would be phenomenal.

“I go back to it, would you sign two Harry Kanes, would you sign two Erling Haalands? For Liverpool it might be a problem unless the system changes.”

Alvarez should be signed instead of a new winger

Although Hutchison was arguing that Liverpool should have signed Alvarez instead of Isak, there is still an argument that the Reds can make it work with both of those players as well as Wirtz and Ekitike.

Liverpool reportedly enquired after Alvarez when he was leaving Man City in 2024, and although a lot has happened since then, they clearly like the player.

It has been obvious for a little while that Liverpool are hoping to sign a new wide forward in order to replace Mohamed Salah this year. Instead of going into a difficult market there, why not just throw that money at Alvarez instead?

A change of system would possibly be needed, but how exciting would a fluid forward line of Isak, Ekitike and Alvarez be, with Wirtz tucking in behind.

For the moment there is no suggestion that this could happen, but as they look to put that final piece of their attacking puzzle together, this may still be one to watch.
