NN: Journalist shares Liverpool's stance on signing free agent Dayot Upamecano securing after Jeremy Jacquet deal

We got some fantastic deadline day news about Jeremy Jacquet, but the focus has quickly shifted to Bayern Munich free agent Dayot Upamecano.

Liverpool have taken a massive step in their mission to rebuild the defence ahead of next season.

Jacquet chose Liverpool over Chelsea for his big move, and is due to arrive in the summer after a fee of £55 million plus add-ons was agreed.

He may not be the only French centre-back to make a high-profile move at the end of the season. Upamecano is yet to accept a new Bayern contract.

However, he isn’t being tipped to follow Jacquet to Anfield.

Florian Plettenberg says Liverpool not in for Dayot Upamecano

Unfortunately for Reds fans, it doesn’t look like we will be signing both centre-backs this summer.

Upamecano has been one of Europe’s best defenders this season, and there will be plenty of interest in him if he chooses to test free agency, but it won’t be from Liverpool.

That’s according to Florian Plettenberg, who told Sky Sports: “This week, we can say that there will be a decision from Upamecano, either he will agree or they will reject the offer and he can leave as a free agent in the summer.

“The patience is no longer there, but we can say Liverpool are not in the race for Dayot Upamecano.”

You can’t have them all, I guess. That Liverpool aren’t in for him suggests they aren’t expecting Ibrahima Konate to leave. Otherwise, the Bayern star would surely be the obvious choice.

We have Upamecano to thank for Jeremy Jacquet decision, Man United were also interested

It’s funny how ripples can have huge impacts on the transfer market.

Upamecano’s hesitance with Bayern prevented them from challenging the Reds for Jacquet’s services.

As Plettenberg explains: “I have been told that Jeremy Jacquet was very open to joining FC Bayern, but they cannot negotiate because they are waiting on the decision from Dayot Upamecano.”

Even if he doesn’t come to Anfield, we should be thankful to Upamecano for keeping the German champs out of the race.

That wasn’t the only surprise reveal from Plettenberg. He also told us that Man United were trying to spoil their bitter rivals’ plans.

As he puts it: “I have been told that Manchester United tried to hijack the deal for Jeremy Jacquet in the past 48 hours, but there was no chance because Jacquet was already in agreement with Liverpool.”

So many moving parts, but Liverpool got their man. Now, focus can shift to immediate business that can strengthen the squad for the rest of the season.
