Just in: Fabrizio Romano says Arsenal have opened talks to sign striker on deadline day

Arsenal have opened talks to sign Hearts striker James Wilson on deadline day in a shock deal, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Gunners have had a quiet transfer window so far this winter with no new signings coming in, but the club have allowed Oleksandr Zinchenko to depart permanently for Ajax and Ethan Nwaneri to join Marseille on loan.

But the club are always alert to opportunities in the market, and they have now made a surprise move to bring in a new striker before the 7pm deadline for a young Scotland international, with talks underway over an initial loan deal for the 18-year-old sensation.

According to Romano, writing on his X account, the north London giants have now opened talks with Scottish Premiership table-toppers Hearts for young striker James Wilson.

The Scotland international, who has also represented Northern Ireland at youth level, has scored twice this season in 10 appearances for the Scottish side, and is very highly rated in Scotland as one for the future.

His profile and skillset have seen Arsenal take a liking to Wilson, and talks are now underway over an initial loan deal between the two clubs.

It's unclear if a deal would be for the first-team or academy team, but with Mikel Merino sidelined with a foot injury and potentially out for the rest of the season, it could be a deal seen as cover for the forward position.

The club are also eyeing a potential midfield signing, with Sky Sports reporting that they are exploring a shock move to sign Newcastle star Sandro Tonali.
