Liverpool's best XI following Jeremy Jacquet arrival does not include Mohamed Salah - opinion

Mohamed Salah’s future at Liverpool beyond 2026 remains uncertain.

With just hours of the winter window left, the Egyptian does look set to stay at Anfield for the remainder of the campaign despite his outburst after Leeds United last month.

However, there remains talk about Salah leaving Liverpool in 2026, with the Saudi Pro League making the winger a top target for later this year, along with Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr.

The 33-year-old is under contract until 2027, but it may be best if the club cash in on him in the next transfer window.

Liverpool need to evolve without Mohamed Salah

Salah is obviously a Liverpool icon, and even the outburst in December should not tarnish his legacy on Merseyside.

But, no matter how great a player is, there comes a time when a team needs to move on and plan for the future.

FSG have already begun to do so, spending around £300m on Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz last year.

Isak has missed much of 2025/26 so far, but it’s already become clear that when the Swede is fit, Slot will struggle to fit said trio, Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai, who has been Liverpool’s best player this term, into the same eleven.

On top of the new arrivals creating a selection problem, the Egyptian’s form has declined of late.

Liverpool fans are concerned about Salah, and his displays since returning from the AFCON have been particularly underwhelming.

So, while he will be down as one of the greatest players in the club’s history, it’s probably time to sell Salah and begin to build a squad that can compete at the top level for many years.

Liverpool could change formation with Jeremy Jacquet

On that front, incoming signing Jeremy Jacquet could be key to unlocking a brand-new system that would actually suit Slot more.

The Liverpool manager wants more pace in his team, mentioning the need for quick players on multiple occasions in the last year.

At present, Salah, Cody Gakpo and Wirtz are largely tasked with providing the width, and none of them are especially fast.

However, with Jacquet set to arrive in the summer, Slot could move to a back-three and use his current full-backs to provide the width and, more importantly, the pace.

Jeremie Frimpong is absolutely rapid and, as we saw at Bayer Leverkusen, is much more effective as a wing-back anyway.

The switch to a back-five would also make it much easier to get Isak, who has to play because of his transfer fee, and Ekitike into the same eleven.

CHANGE MY MIND: This WILL be Liverpool’s best XI after Jacquet arrives!

Isak HAS to play and wing-backs will give Slot the pace he’s been crying out for…

The only downside could be that Szoboszlai is slightly less impactful, but the Hungarian has already proven he can shine in any position at Liverpool.
