Sverre Nypan’s Middlesbrough loan has been terminated early, with the young midfielder returning to Manchester City.
The young midfielder joined Boro in a season-long loan deal in the summer, but it hasn’t worked out for the Norway international at the Riverside.
His first taste of English football after joining City from Rosenborg in the summer in a £12.5 million deal, Boro were excited to land a player they’d tracked themselves during his exciting breakthrough in his home country at the age of 15.
However, Nypan has struggled to make an impact on Teesside, with the 19-year-old often looking too lightweight and off the pace in the Championship.

Nypan did manage to make 21 appearances during his time at Boro. But only three of those were starts, and with added competition in the Boro forward line, he had fallen well down the pecking order.
Jeremy Sarmiento and Leo Castledine have arrived this month to strengthen forward options, while Boro are well-stocked in central midfield, with Alex Gilbert and Law McCabe providing backup cover for Hayden Hackney, Aidan Morris and Alan Browne.
Since failing to take opportunities with extended game-time in the festive clashes with Bristol City and Blackburn Rovers, Nypan has not seen more 13 minutes of action in a game since, with five late cameos from the bench, while being unused altogether in Boro’s last two.
Conversations took place between the two clubs heading into deadline day and in the end it was agreed that a mutual termination of the loan was of the benefit of all parties.
Boro said: “Sverre Nypan has returned to Manchester City after his loan spell was mutually terminated. We’d like to thank Sverre for all his efforts and wish him all the best for the future.”
As things stand, Nypan is returning to the Etihad with the intention of staying there for the remainder of the season. Homegrown quotas mean he will be ineligible to play in Premier League or Champions League matches, though he could feature for them in the FA Cup, with cup-tied rules changing this season.
