Arsenal have been linked with an unexpected transfer deadline day move for a young striker making his name north of the border.

Arsenal are set for an unexpected transfer deadline day bid for record-breaking Hearts striker James Wilson, according to a report from transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Romano claims that the Gunners are in “discussions” with the Scottish side to sign the 18-year-old forward on an initial loan deal – but who is Wilson, and why are Arsenal interested in adding him to their squad as they battle for the Premier League title?

Who is alleged Arsenal target James Wilson?

The talented teenage striker became the youngest male player in history to play for the Scotland national team when he made his debut against Greece in the Nations League in March of last year – and many pundits believe the youngster has an exceptionally bright future.

Although Wilson’s involvement in Hearts’ unexpected bid for the Scottish Premiership this season has been limited, starting just one match, he had an impressive season in 2024/25, scoring five goals for his club, and has a record of four goals in four games for Scotland’s Under-21s as well.

He also broke the record for the youngest goalscorer in the UEFA Europa Conference League in December 2024 when he scored against Moldovan side Petrocub Hîncești, and has two goals in the Scottish League Cup to his name in the current campaign.

A tall forward who is unafraid to take defenders on in tight spaces, Wilson has impressed with both his first touch and his willingness to take shots on from all angles, with a ferocious right foot and some fine finishes to his name already. Arsenal, it seems, are willing to gamble that he can turn those qualities into a fine career.

Could Arsenal make unexpected moves on deadline day?

A bid for Wilson isn’t the first surprising transfer bid with which the Gunners have been linked – Romano’s report comes shortly after an astonishing story from Sky Sports Germany which suggested that Arsenal had made an offer for Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali in the wake of a serious injury sustained by Mikel Merino.

Sky Sports reporters in the UK have since moved to quash talk of a shocking late move for the Italian, who only signed a new deal at St. James’ Park last week, but the story may at least suggest that Arsenal are likely to be rather livelier on deadline day than most pundits had expected.

Wilson is unlikely to push for a first-team role from day one should he move to the Emirates before the window closes at 7pm on Monday, but would instead be a developmental prospect who likely started his Arsenal career with the Under-21 side.

The move to sign him on an initial loan rather than on a permanent basis would rule out the possibility that Wilson was immediately loaned out to another side to gain further experience, and suggests that Mikel Arteta could be keen to have the youngster available should Arsenal endure any more injuries up front, a position in which they have been dogged by fitness problems over the past year.

It remains to be seen whether the deal for Wilson goes through, but as it stands it certainly seems like a less distant prospect than a move for Tonali, who is likely to remain with Newcastle despite those early deadline day rumours.
