Liverpool should be ready to rival Arsenal for Sandro Tonali in surprise deadline day drama - opinion

Transfer deadline day does not often throw up too many surprises for Liverpool supporters who have become used to their club’s methodical approach to buying players.

However, the Reds have changed tack in recent times, and the most recent summer window showed that they can still make waves in the market.

With that in mind, fans headed into Monday’s deadline day with some faint hope that a new signing may be on the way. Liverpool have agreed a deal for Jeremy Jacquet to join this summer, but supporters want a more immediate addition.

While signings in defence and attack are the clear priorities, Liverpool have also indicated that they could soon make some changes in their midfield. Curtis Jones’ dalliance with Inter Milan was further proof that plans are afoot to revamp the middle of the pitch.

Surprisingly, deadline day could throw up a real chance for Liverpool to move that project forward, with Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali potentially on the move.

Liverpool should pounce if Sandro Tonali is available

Journalist Fabrizio Romano recently claimed that Tonali could leave Newcastle in 2026 as he eyes a move to a bigger club.

On Monday morning, German reporter Florian Plettenberg broke the news that Arsenal are exploring the possibility of making a deadline day swoop for the Italian.

While Plettenberg acknowledges that the transfer will be ‘very difficult’ to pull off, if there is even a chance Tonali is available, Liverpool should muscle in.

The Reds were heavily linked with a move for the 25-year-old way back when he was playing for Brescia, and it still remains the case that he would add plenty to their midfield.

If the door is open at all it will take a big offer to get him out of St James’ Park, but if that light goes green at any stage before 7pm, Liverpool must respond.

Tonali could be one to watch this summer

In the more likely event that Tonali is still a Newcastle player on Tuesday, Liverpool should start their preparations for a potential summer raid.

The Italy international would be an upgrade on Jones in particular, and with the Scouser looking ever more likely to leave, there is sense to get ahead of the game.

Tonali is still contracted to Newcastle for three more years with the option of a fourth, so he is clearly going to cost a big fee if he is to leave. But Liverpool have money to spend and that should not be a big issue.

Certainly, if they allow him to move to a title rival in Arsenal, the Reds may feel the cost of not signing Tonali even more acutely.

So, whether it is this transfer deadline day or the next window in the summer, Liverpool fans should get a little more familiar with Newcastle’s No. 8.
