The latest transfer talk from the Riverside Stadium as Middlesbrough look to add to their squad on transfer deadline day.
Middlesbrough have confirmed they have mutually agreed to terminate Sverre Nypan’s season-long loan deal - and the Norwegian youngster could now play a part in Manchester City’s faltering bid to become Premier League champions.
There was much excitement when Boro saw off a number of suitors to secure a deal for Nypan just days after he agreed to move to the Etihad Stadium from Rosenberg. After becoming a regular feature in Boro sides over the first month of his loan stint on Teesside, Nypan has been forced to settle for a place on the substitutes bench in recent months and his last start for the club came in a 1-1 draw with Wrexham in October. There has been plenty of talk surrounding Nypan and why he couldn’t force his way into the Boro side on a regular basis and head coach Kim Hellberg approached those discussions head on recently.
Speaking about Nypan’s situation last month, the Boro boss said: “Doesn’t everyone want to play more? If I could have played against Fulham, I would like to have played in that game too,” he said. “It’s the same for everyone. Everyone wants to play as much as possible, and there’s nothing wrong with that. There’s a few that have played every minute, and I’m sure they are happy, but I’m also sure that everyone else will have wanted to play more. The players want to play, and if they are loan players, their club will want them to play as much as possible.
“But there’s so much more around that that is important – how they are acting when they are not playing, how can we help them in that situation? I think everyone that trains with us can see we are doing as much as we can to help them develop as much as possible. But it is only ten spots and a goalkeeper – you cannot do anything about that.”
However, after remaining as an unused substitute in three of Boro’s last four Championship fixtures, Nypan’s return to his parent club has been confirmed following days of speculation suggesting he could be recalled by City and utilised during the final months of their attempts to regain the Premier League title.
A statement released on the Boro website on Monday morning read: “Sverre Nypan has returned to Manchester City after his loan spell was mutually terminated. The 21-year-old returns to the Etihad after making 21 appearances for Boro since joining in the summer. Of those appearances, the youngster started just three games and had found opportunities limited.
“During his time with the club, Sverre made his full international debut for Norway after stepping up from the Under-21s. We’d like to thank Sverre for all his efforts and wish him all the best for the future.”
