Liverpool transfer target Jeremy Jacquet has shown the character that the club will be getting should they complete a deadline day deal for the defender. The Rennes man is closing in on a late move to Anfield, with the Reds hoping to get a deal done before the 7pm deadline before loaning him back to the Ligue 1 side for the remainder of the season.

The club have beaten off competition from the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United and agreed an initial £55 million deal with Rennes plus £5million in add-ons. Jacquet is reported to have been impressed by the project proposed by Liverpool, with reports claiming that he feels he will get more game time at Anfield.

If that is the case, it’s not the first time in his short career that Jacquet has prioritised playing time. The youngster dropped down a league to join Ligue 2 side Clemert on loan in January 2024.

In an interview with L’Equipe, via Ligue 1 last year, Jacquet spoke about that decision. “It was either stay at Rennes with little playing time or go and discover something new, he said.

“I chose minutes on the pitch — and it paid off.”

He was recalled back in February last year, after making a total of 24 appearances for the club. The 20-year-old has since gone on to establish himself as a regular at Rennes, ahead of his expected deadline day move to Liverpool.

“When you’re young, the most important thing is to play,” he added about his decision to go on loan. “That came from me and my family. I didn’t hesitate.

“It shows I’m confident in myself and ready to make sacrifices to reach my goals.”

He credits his family for instilling the values that have helped him so far. “I inherited respect and humility from them,” he said. “With that, it’s impossible for me to act like someone who doesn’t want to work."

Jacquet has also explained the style of play that Liverpool can expect from him in a Red shirt. “I’m calm on the ball, maybe I can look a bit nonchalant — but I’m focused,” he said.

“What defines me is playing out well, breaking lines with the right pass.”

He added: “The coach asks me to communicate more, to lead, to add a bit more aggression. I’m working on finding the right balance.”

Should the transfer be completed, it will add to Arne Slot’s defensive options for the second half of the season. Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk are the only fit first team centre-backs currently available.
