Transfer window closing times and deadline day rules explained
Closing times across England, Germany, Italy and France: Most major European leagues have synchronised their windows to shut at the same time this year. The Premier League, EFL, Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1 will all conclude their transfer business at 7pm on Monday, February 2.
Notable exceptions: There are a couple of prominent leagues that close their transfer window later today. The Scottish Premiership and LaLiga will shut at 11pm.
Safety net: If a club is still engaged in negotiations for a player just before 7pm, it doesn't mean they won't complete the signing. Between 5pm and 7pm, clubs can lodge a 'deal sheet' which provides them with an additional two hours to complete the paperwork - provided an agreement has been reached in principle.
Where does this apply?: Deal sheets only apply to domestic transfers in the Premier League and the EFL. This means that for international moves, clubs must still adhere to the FIFA Transfer Matching System.
Free agency: The 7pm deadline only applies to players currently registered with a club. If a player is a free agent, they can technically be signed at any time, even after the window shuts.
Squad list deadline: However, clubs must register their updated 25-man squad lists by February 5, 2026. This means that any free agent would need to be signed by then to feature in the second half of the season.
Loans: Loan arrangements adhere to the same deadline as permanent moves. In the Premier League, clubs are restricted to two domestic loans simultaneously and a maximum of four across the entire campaign.
Liverpool agree deal for defender: The Reds have agreed a £55million transfer, plus £5m in add-ons, for Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet. The 20-year-old is set to have a medical before signing a five-year deal with the option of a further year.
What's the catch?: However, Jacquet will not head to Anfield until the summer. The Reds beat Chelsea and Manchester United to the defender's signature after missing out on Marc Guehi, who joined Manchester City last month.
