Former NBA player dies at 67

Former NBA player Brad Branson, who spent time with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Indiana Pacers during his career, has died. He was 67 years old.

In addition to spending two years in the NBA, Branson also played several years overseas.

He played for Real Madrid from 1986-88, and the club [announced his death](https://www.realmadrid.com/en-US/news/club/announcements/comunicado-oficial-28-01-2026) in a statement last week.

“Real Madrid C. F., its President and its Board of Directors deeply regret the death of Brad Branson, player of our basketball team between 1986 and 1988,” the statement said. “In the two seasons he played in our jersey, Branson played 100 games and won 1 Korac Cup in 1988.

“Real Madrid would like to express its condolences and affection to all his family, teammates and loved ones. Brad Branson has passed away at the age of 67. May he rest in peace.”

Branson played college basketball at SMU, before being drafted by the Detroit Pistons in the second round of the 1980 NBA Draft.

He did not appear in a game with the Pistons and instead started his professional career overseas, before returning to the NBA.

Branson appeared in 10 games and made three starts with the Cleveland Cavaliers during the 1981-82 season.

In 1982-83, Branson played in 62 games and made two starts for the Indiana Pacers. In total, he appeared in 72 NBA games, averaging 5.4 points and 2.9 rebounds per game.
