Chelsea have been forced to move on to other targets after recent developments
Chelsea target Jeremy Jacquet at Rennes has turned down the Blues in favour of Premier League rivals Liverpool. Arne Slot’s side have ‘agreed’ a £60million deal for the defender, as per BBC Sport. That has forced Liam Rosenior to pursue other targets in his position.
The London outfit have until the deadline at 7pm to complete any final bits of incoming or outgoing business. They won 3-2 at home to West Ham over the weekend. Joao Pedro, Marc Cucurella and Enzo Fernandez got their goals against the Hammers at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea snubbed by Jeremy Jacquet
Jacquet believes he wouldn’t get as much game time as he wants if he went to Chelsea, according to reporter Gail Davis. Therefore, Liverpool felt a more desirable option for him. Ibrahima Konate is out of contract in the summer, whilst Virgil van Dijk sees his deal expire next year.
Davis has said, as per a report by Sky Sports: "What happened with Jacquet is despite, as we understand, Chelsea offering the same deal as Liverpool did, the player felt his minutes may not be what was desired if he made that big move into the Premier League. He is a man that has been linked to Chelsea over the past few weeks. Chelsea are looking to cover that centre back position.
"It's still set to be a story of centre backs here today. One of the reasons is Mamadou Sarr has been recalled from his loan at Strasbourg. He played last night against PSG and recently played well for Senegal at AFCON. He's a player Liam Rosenior clearly knows well from his time at Strasbourg and it feels like less of a risk to end that loan deal. They paid £13m for him, they own him and Rosenior will feel he can hit the ground running.”
He added: "When you look at the other centre backs available, he spoke about Josh Acheampong. I asked Rosenior on Friday if he would let him go because he's been limited in game time and clearly a huge talent. But Rosenior said 'I want him here' and when you've got him and Sarr arriving, plus the others who are already stocked in that back line, Jacquet felt it would be a better move in terms of going to Liverpool."
Who is Jeremy Jacquet amid Chelsea interest?
Jacquet, 20, is a centre-back who has been on the books at Rennes since 2019. He has risen up through their academy and was a regular at various different youth levels. The youngster initially broke into their B team back in 2022.
He was loaned out to Clermont Foot back in 2024 to get some experience under his belt and to boost his development. The France youth international has since made 31 appearances in all competitions for his current club, 19 of which have come this term. He is tied down until 2029 in France but it appears he will be heading out the exit door now to Liverpool.
Chelsea will be disappointed that they haven’t been able to secure his signature. Nevertheless, they have time to pursue other options. Rosenior’s men are back in action on Tuesday night with their Carabao Cup semi-final second leg tie against Arsenal.
