"Unfortunately for Slot..." - Journalist gives key update on Liverpool's potential next manager

**The pressure on Arne Slot may have eased recently, but a new update has made it clear how perilous his situation at Liverpool remains.**

Slot has had a good week, with the Reds winning 6-0 and 4-1 at home to Qarabag and Newcastle United, respectively.

It was two much-needed victories for the Dutchman, with Liverpool’s performance against the Magpies arguably one of the best of the season so far.

Speaking to [_Football Insider_](https://www.footballinsider247.com/youre-going-to-hear-more-about-xabi-alonso-taking-over-at-liverpool/), journalist Pete O’Rourke claimed that Xabi Alonso remains a leading option to replace Slot, especially if the Reds fail to qualify for the Champions League:

_“As things stand right now Liverpool want to back Arne Slot, they want to give him at least until the end of the season. If they were to miss that in Champions League qualification, it will just increase pressure even more on Arne Slot. Unfortunately for Slot, he has got the shadow of Xabi Alonso hanging over him. Alonso is a Liverpool legend from his playing time there._

_“A lot of fans have a lot of support for Alonso too, so if things don’t improve at Liverpool you’re going to hear more and more talk about him taking over. So it’s a key period for slot now he really needs to build a bit of momentum get some results and as I said the minimum I think Liverpool would be expecting would be qualification for next season’s Champions League.”_

**A vital period for Slot in his Liverpool career**

---------------------------------------------------

Slot will be well aware that two wins in a row won’t do a huge amount to silence the dissenting voices, whether it be a section of the Liverpool fanbase or some in the media.

For the 47-year-old, these wins have to be the foundation for an improved run of form and results, with three points at home to Manchester City in the Premier League this weekend another big step in the right direction.

Some Liverpool supporters may have already made their minds up about Slot, instead wanting Alonso to come in, but all he can do is show that this side have turned a massive corner.

There is still a huge amount of work to do, but if the Reds’ head coach can mastermind a turnaround until May, he will deserve to keep his job.
