Sheffield United 'progressing' with stunning loan deal for Manchester City's Leeds United hero

Sheffield United are reportedly making a shock move to sign Leeds United hero Kalvin Phillips on loan from Sheffield United.

Once the jewel in the crown at Elland Road, Phillips has endured a tough time since his £45m move from Leeds to Manchester City in 2022.

He has been unable to reach the dizzy heights he ascended to with his boyhood club, instead seeing his stock plummet.

Loan spells with West Ham United and Ipswich Town have failed to resurrect his reputation and it appears a return to the Championship could be on the cards.

Sheffield United eye shock Kalvin Phillips move

According to The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath, the Blades are making progress in efforts to land the 30-year-old on loan.

Posting on X, he said: “Sheffield United are progressing with a deal for Kalvin Phillips from MCFC. Competition with European clubs for England midfielder but talks with SUFC.”

Phillips may have seen his reputation take a hit but he would still be a significant coup for the Blades, who are languishing in the bottom half of the second tier.

Phillips has struggled with injury of late but is expected to return soon and could play a significant role in South Yorkshire.

A move to Sheffield United would reunite him with his former Leeds teammate and close friend Patrick Bamford, who linked up with Chris Wilder’s squad earlier in the season.

Busy day at Bramall Lane

Sunderland’s Leo Hjelde, meanwhile, has already put pen to paper on a loan deal at the club. He will remain at Sheffield United until the end of the season having found opportunities limited at the Stadium of Light.

Clubs in England have until 7pm to wrap up their business unless they have secured a deal sheet.
