Sandro Tonali has already made big claim about Newcastle United future as Arsenal watch on

Newcastle United transfers: Sandro Tonali has already addressed his future at the club amid transfer links.

Sandro Tonali has never been too far away from transfer speculation linking him with a move away from Newcastle United.

Ever since his £55million from AC Milan in 2023, the midfielder has been linked with a return to Italy by the press in his home country. A 10-month betting ban and question marks over how he would adapt following his return only intensified the speculation.

But Tonali made a huge impact at Newcastle after returning from his ban and established himself as one of the most important players in Eddie Howe’s side. The Italy international played a key role in The Magpies’ Carabao Cup win and Champions League qualification last season.

The 25-year-old made a positive start to the current season and was named player of the match in Newcastle’s 2-0 Champions League win over Athletic Club back in November.

But his interview with the media after the game cast doubt over his long-term future at the club.

Sandro Tonali on NUFC future

Tonali is under contract at Newcastle until 2029 with the option of a further year after agreeing an extension in private during his ban.

“This extension was three [seasons] ago after the ban,” Tonali said. “I don't know why everybody spoke about this.

“I signed after the ban for another year and I'm happy, not just for one more year here, but I'm happy for the people, for the fans, for every player, every member of the staff here in Newcastle.

“Every day, I work to win every game. I work for every person in Newcastle.”

But when asked directly about his future after the Athletic Club match, Tonali left the door open to a potential exit.

“This is a tough question because in football you need to think year on year,” he said.

“I don’t want to say ‘I want to stay here 10 years’ and in two years, three years, four years, five years I will go. I want to think, just for me, year on year.

“This is football. Last summer was tough for us, for Alex [Isak], but this is football.

“If you have an option for your life, for another team you need to think about everything. I don’t want to say, ‘Yes, I want to stay here for 10 years’ but now I’m happy here. I don’t think anything about another team.”

Shock Sandro Tonali transfer link emerges on deadline day

Sky Sport Germany dropped a deadline day transfer bombshell by claiming Premier League leaders Arsenal had made an approach to sign Tonali that was knocked back by Newcastle.

While Tonali is set to stay at Newcastle at least until the end of the season, the speculation won’t go away and could grow stronger once the summer window comes around.
