The January transfer window is ending on a positive note for Liverpool, even if there will be no immediate signings. The Anfield club have managed to sign Jeremy Jacquet for €60m plus €10m add-ons, with a 5-year contract + 1 year option ready for the Frenchman to sign.
Jacquet is currently in progress with his medical on Merseyside and will only join up with his new club at the end of the season. However, despite the defensive reinforcements, it seems that Liverpool is still looking to future-proof their backline.
DaveOCKOP.com can exclusively reveal that Liverpool are showing interest in Ajax centre-back Youri Baas and PSV defender Ryan Flamingo.
Youri Baas has established himself as a regular in the Dutch capital after a loan spell from NEC Nijmegen. He is a product of the Excelsior Rotterdam academy, having been signed by the Amsterdam giants as a 15-year-old.
Baas is primarily deployed as a left-sided centre-back but can also operate at left-back when required. He has managed 27 appearances for Ajax so far this term, featuring in nearly every game of his side’s Champions League campaign as well.
He is contracted to Ajax until June 2028, and Liverpool efforts for the 22-year-old are looking promising.
Ryan Flamingo, meanwhile, is a 23-year-old centre-back at PSV Eindhoven who has emerged as a Liverpool target. Standing 186cm tall, Flamingo is renowned for his exceptional ball-playing abilities and progressive passing, ranking in the top percentiles amongst centre-backs for progressive passes per 90 minutes over the last year
The PSV captain has featured in 20 Eredivisie matches this season with 2 goals, whilst also appearing in four Champions League fixtures. His versatility extends beyond centre-back, with Flamingo capable of playing as a defensive midfielder.
However, with all the centre-back signings made this month, including the likes of Mor Talla Ndiaye from Senegal and the soon-to-be official Jeremy Jacquet acquisition, both players are showing a bit of cold feet regarding a potential move.
In turn, Liverpool have explained that they want a young crop of centre-backs to compete with each other for spots in the coming years, and that it could be in their interest to make a switch as soon as possible to get an advantage over other players in the Reds setup already.
The club has sold the idea that they could herald in a new era of defenders at Anfield, and talks are continuing today in the background over a deal this window or potentially in the summer.
