Liverpool fans were given a quiet clue over latest left-back plans just before transfer deadline day - opinion

Liverpool supporters were forced to reckon with the possibility of a future without Andy Robertson this January after seeing surprise links over a move to Tottenham Hotspur.

For a time it had looked possible that Robertson would really leave the Reds after eight-and-a-half years, with Kostas Tsimikas preparing to return from a loan at Roma.

Thankfully, things have gone quiet on that front and Robertson looks likely to stay at Liverpool until his contract expires at the end of the season.

Nevertheless, the chances of the Scot signing an extension appear to have disappeared completely. That means Liverpool will almost certainly have a change in their left-back options for 2026/27.

Tsimikas could return as back-up to Milos Kerkez, but the Reds do have several other options at their disposal. One of those is Liverpool academy graduate Luke Chambers, whose loan spell at Charlton has gotten off to a promising start.

In an ideal world, Liverpool were likely planning for either Owen Beck or Chambers to slot in as a first-team option whenever Robertson’s time with the club eventually came to an end.

Unfortunately, both youngsters have been badly affected by injury, with Beck forced to return early from a loan at Derby County this season without having played a single game.

It was moment of sheer class from the youngster and sent a reminder that with Liverpool’s left-back options up in the air, his name should be very firmly in the mix next season.

Calum Scanlon is one to watch as well

Chambers and Beck are not the only two Liverpool youngsters who will be watching Robertson’s ongoing situation with interest.

Calum Scanlon is another who has been involved with the senior team in the past having made two appearances during the 2023/24 campaign.

Like Chambers and Beck, Scanlon has also had to deal with injury issues, one of which cut short a promising loan with Millwall last season.

After proving his fitness Scanlon joined League One side Cardiff City for the rest of the campaign on Sunday.

One year younger than Chambers, and now one rung lower in the Football League, the 20-year-old is likely behind his older teammate in the pecking order for next season, but if he can hit the ground running and do well with the Bluebirds, then do not count him out either.
