FSG need to sanction transfer for 'better version' of 'slack' Liverpool star, thinks Jamie Carragher

Jamie Carragher still thinks there’s more work to be done at Liverpool after the addition of Jeremy Jacquet.

The Reds are signing Jacquet ahead of a move in the summer of 2026, winning the race ahead of Chelsea.

The young stopper is arriving in a £55m deal, and FSG could make more signings if they wished.

On that front, Jamie Carragher is pleased with the Jacquet deal, but has suggested Liverpool still need another defender.

Liverpool need better version of Joe Gomez

Speaking live on Sky Sports’ Deadline Day coverage on February 2, Carragher shared his view that the Reds need a better version of Joe Gomez.

He said: “It’s not so much right-back. I think Liverpool need a better version of Joe Gomez, really, right now, or a fit Joe Gomez, if you like, somebody who can cover right-back and centre-back.

“I mean, Konate and Virgil van Dijk are still first choice right now. I think that will change in the summer. But in terms of just getting a body in in case something happens to Konate.

“Liverpool now have got problems at right-back, and you don’t want to have a situation where, I think, in the league game against Bournemouth, Liverpool had a midfield player playing at centre-back, Endo, you don’t want that situation arising.”

On whether Liverpool should add another defender to their ranks before the 7pm deadline, he stated: “Yes, I would still like to see Liverpool sign another defender today, because I think they will need one before the end of the season.”

Joe Gomez could leave Liverpool in 2026

Come the summer, it seems Carragher may well get his wish for an upgrade on the Englishman.

Reports in January suggested Gomez could leave Liverpool before the 2026/27 season gets underway.

He will have 12 months left on his contract come the summer, so cashing in would make sense.

The versatile defender has made over 200 appearances for Liverpool since signing from Charlton Athletic in 2015.

But Gomez has been called ‘slack’ this season, has struggled with injury issues, and has never really been able to hold down a regular starting berth at Anfield.
