Arsenal have been handed a major boost after scans showed Bukayo Saka did not suffer a serious injury in the warm-up at Leeds.

Saka is a doubt for Tuesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg with Chelsea but Arsenal do not think he has suffered a long-term problem and hope he will make a swift return.

The winger missed the 4-0 win against Leeds on Saturday after sustaining an injury in the warm-up at Elland Road.

Mikel Arteta described the issue after the match as a “little niggle” but said he was unsure over the severity of the problem.

Speaking on Monday, the Arsenal boss issued a positive update on Saka and said he could even feature against Chelsea on Tuesday.

Arteta said: "We have to wait. Today he was better but we have to wait and see how he responds and then make the decision.

“It doesn't look like something too serious. Whether he's going to be available tomorrow or for the weekend we'll wait and see."

Saka missed three matches with a hamstring injury earlier this season and Arsenal have since been noticeably careful with his minutes.

Having previously been an ever-present in the side, Saka has started Premier League matches against Brentford, Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth on the bench in the last couple of months.

Arsenal are set to be without Mikel Merino for a significant period after tests on a foot problem revealed he required surgery.

Arteta said: “It's a very rare injury so we have to wait and see once we have the surgery how that reacts daily. Monitor it throughout the weeks. I know Mikel is going to do absolutely everything to come back as quickly as possible.”
