Paul Merson left‘shocked’at Chelsea’s January transfer window decision

As the January transfer window enters the final few hours, it is becoming increasingly obvious Chelsea are not going to be completing any major deals.

Monday looks set to be dominated by player exits for the Blues, although not involving any major first team names.

Axel Disasi is set for a medical at West Ham, although has been the recipient of interest from Nottingham Forest in the final hours.

The Blues seemed to put all their eggs in the basket of Jeremy Jacquet, however despite chasing him all month he is now set to join Liverpool.

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson admitted he was surprised Chelsea had not completed a deal to sign the centre-back, however was thankful that it meant Josh Acheampong would remain at Stamford Bridge.

He said: “I found it extraordinary that [Jacquet] is coming in the summer. They need a centre-half now to get top four or top five.

“It surprises me. It’s a good signing – as a Chelsea fan I’m shocked he hasn’t come to Chelsea, but I’m glad Achaempong is now staying.”

“I’m majorly shocked. I don’t know why for the life of me he’s staying in France until the start of next season. With that kind of money, you want him now!”

We had the whole of January to sign Jeremy Jacquet and come up short 😡

Why Jeremy Jacquet turned down Chelsea move

It had previously been noted that Chelsea had agreed personal terms with Jacquet, and he was only interested in joining them.

However, it emerged that Chelsea recalling Sarr and keeping Acheampong was a determining factor in changing his mind.

It remains to be seen if the Blues enter the market again for a new centre-back at the end of the season, with the hope being that their key man at the back will have returned.

Levi Colwill has missed the entire season due to an ACL injury, however is back on the pitch as he continues his recovery.
