Mikel Arteta has spoken ahead of the Carabao Cup semi-final clash against Chelsea. The Gunners lead the tie 3-2 on aggregate after the first leg.
Bukayo Saka is a primary concern after pulling up with a hip issue during the warm-up before the recent match against Leeds. While Arteta indicated the problem does not look too serious, his availability for the Chelsea game remains uncertain pending further assessment.
Mikel Merinohas been dealt a major blow after medical evaluations confirmed he has suffered a fracture in his foot. The midfielder is now set to undergo surgery to address the issue, which will result in a significant period on the sidelines.
Arteta noted that Merino's specific foot injury is considered quite rare, making his exact recovery timeline difficult to predict. Although the club hopes he might return before the end of the campaign, a potential return date has been tentatively set for May.
The manager expressed deep disappointment regarding Merino's absence, describing the loss of the 29-year-old as a "big blow" to the team. He highlighted the player's unique versatility and capacity to compete in various positions as qualities that will be hard to replace.
Max Dowman is making positive progress in his recovery from an ankle injury and has recently returned to training on the pitch. Arteta emphasised that the club is being extra cautious with the youngster's rehabilitation due to his age and ongoing school commitments.
