The bargain centre-back Liverpool could sign right now after failed Lutsharel Geertruida transfer

Liverpool could target a bargain centre-back deal before the transfer window shuts

After seeing top target Marc Guehi sign for Premier League rivals Manchester City, Liverpool have been snubbed of another centre-back option. Time is now against them to get a deal over the line before the winter window slams shut.

The Reds had identified Lutsharel Geertruida as a ‘favoured option’ to patch up Liverpool’s defensive woes this season. They had been pushing to sign the 25-year-old, who is currently on loan with Sunderland from RB Leipzig.

Liverpool denied loan move for Lutsharel Geertruida

Joyce has reported that the Black Cats are ‘not in a position’ to sanction a move, despite Geertruida wanting to make the switch and Liverpool willing to proceed with the deal.

The Netherlands international is a right-back by trade but has been playing most of this season at centre-back. Such a signing would have been crucial for Arne Slot, who is currently without Conor Bradley, Jeremie Frimpong, Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni.

Liverpool can target bargain centre-back Marcos Senesi

With time against them, Liverpool could look for a quick-fix signing before the deadline. The Reds could consider revisiting the Bournemouth ranks, having signed Milos Kerkez from the Cherries just seven months ago.

The Argentine centre-back, who has four Premier League assists so far this season, is out of contract in the summer and has ‘shown no interest’ in signing a new deal. BBC Sport reported in December that Senesi had rejected ‘at least three lucrative offers’ from Bournemouth to extend his stay, but nothing has moved him to put pen to paper.

Instead, the 28-year-old is keen to ‘take the next step in his career’ and Liverpool could offer him that. They would likely negotiate a bargain price for his signature, as Bournemouth run the risk of losing him for free in less than six months otherwise.

While he would serve as a much-needed rotational option this season for the Reds to navigate both the Premier League and Champions League, he could also be the man to replace Ibrahima Konate.

The France international is also out of contract this summer and has shown no signs of signing a new deal. Gomez has also been linked with an exit, which would leave Liverpool with just Van Dijk and Leoni at centre-back. However, with Senesi on board, it creates less of a need for the Reds to scramble in the summer, and provides them with much-needed support to see out this unpredictable season.
