Liverpool are closing in on signing Jeremy Jacquet.

Rennes have confirmed they have ‘obtained’ the fee they were hoping for as Jeremy Jacquet closes in on a switch to Liverpool.

The centre-back is closing in on a deal to join the Reds for up to £60 million ahead of the transfer window closing at 19.00 GMT. Jacquet was in England to have a medical today but he will remain at Rennes for the rest of the 2025-26 season, having made 19 appearances so far in the French club’s pursuit of European qualification.

Rennes head coach Habib Beye believes that the sale of Jacquet, and keeping him for the remainder of the campaign, is the ‘best deal’ that he could have hoped for. Beye said ahead of his side’s Coupe de France clash against Marseille: “I don’t want to comment on something that is not yet real. It’s supposition. We negotiated the transfer, obtained the amount that the club looked for, we respected the player’s wish and we have him for the remainder of the season. It’s the best deal we could hope for.”

Jacquet’s exit will represent a club-record sale for Rennes, having banked £55.5 million when Jeremy Doku joined Manchester City. Beye added: “It’s the reality of the market. The club he joins will offer him Champions League football and what is currently the best league in the world. We simply don’t have the means to fight.

"Even if we were to ratify the Champions League or possibly the Europa League today, you are still at a lower level in terms of club category, challenge, salary, and in every category.

"I believe that Jérémy Jacquet should remain a Stade Rennais player, but given what we are experiencing and what he is experiencing, we simply don't have the means to fight.”

Given that Jacquet has had a medical, he is unlikely to play for Rennes against Marseille. "He will not be here for training today, we don't know if he can play tomorrow but we'll see depending on the situation,” said Beye.
