Latest: Chelsea’s January moves go just as expected as frugal Blues let top target go to rivals

It was always expected to be a quiet January for Chelsea and, well, it’s turned out that way.

As we said all along, the most likely action was the shuffling around of a few loan players. Which is exactly what’s happened.

The one serious rumour that took hold a couple of weeks ago was that the Blues wanted Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes. There was a while when it looked more than possible. Fabrizio Romano even noted that the club had agreed personal terms with the defender.

But his price tag, combined with Rennes’ reluctance to sell and Chelsea’s spending constraints from their UEFA settlement, always made a January deal unlikely. However, things are even worse than that. Not only are we not going to sign him in January, we’re now not going to sign him at all.

According to the latest reports, Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign the outstanding young defender in the summer.

Chelsea, for their part, have recalled Mamadou Sarr from his loan at Strasbourg, meaning they have added some depth at the back.

Jacquet looks like he’s heading to Liverpool now, backing up rumours we had in previous days about such a move being close.

Aaron Anselmino is about to leave Chelsea on loan for our sister club Strasbourg, after some interesting accusations of tapping up from Dortmund, the last team he was with.
