However, Elliot hasn’t been playing for Villa an awful lot this season, and there has been speculation about a return to Liverpool.

Liverpool plan talks with Aston Villa about Harvey Elliott

It seems like Villa were reluctant to play the Englishman as they do not want to trigger the option to pay Liverpool for the player.

However, an agreement could now be reached that suits all parties and means Elliott can start featuring on a more regular basis.

According to the Daily Mail, Aston Villa and Liverpool are set to hold talks over the terms of the versatile midfielder’s loan.

He is currently two matches away from Villa having to pay the Reds £35m.

But changes could be made to either raise the number of appearances Elliott must make to trigger the option, or make it an option to buy.

Crucially, an agreement does not need to be reached by the time the transfer window shuts at 7pm.

Why aren’t Liverpool recalling Harvey Elliott?

Mohamed Salah praised Elliott’s loyalty when he left the club this past summer.

The 22-year-old has made 149 appearances for Liverpool, impressing in several positions.

In 2024/25, Elliott was predominantly used as a number 10, making 11 appearances through the middle.

At present, Liverpool’s current primary attacking midfielder, Dominik Szoboszlai, is needed as right-back cover.

So, it could have made some sense for Elliott to return and get some minutes in the middle when Szoboszlai is needed in defence or Florian Wirtz is playing out wide.

That does not look set to happen, though, and it remains to be seen what the future will hold for Elliott come 2026/27.
