Liverpool star could be handed major lifeline as Reds prepare crucial talks over his future

Liverpool and Aston Villa are said to be preparing discussions over Harvey Elliott’s situation

The 22-year-old has been a focus of the headlines recently after being completely frozen out of action under Unai Emery. In a season that looked to provide Elliott with the regular football he has been pushing for, he found himself drastically starved of time on the pitch.

Before the new year, Elliott had played just 167 minutes of football across all competitions for Villa, not even the equivalent of two full matches. However, he has recently been reintroduced to the squad and Liverpool are expected to hold important talks over their current loan agreement with Aston Villa.

What happened to Harvey Elliott at Aston Villa?

Elliott is on loan with Villa until the end of the season and his deal includes an obligation to buy clause, which would see the Reds pocket £35 million for the permanent deal. That clause will only become active if the playmaker reaches ten appearances for the Villans.

Elliott played 45 minutes against Fulham on September 28th and was left on the bench for the following two games. After that, he was absent for 13 Premier League games as Emery opted against including him in any match-day squads.

The tide seems to be turning on what has been a dismal season for Elliott so far. According to Mail Sport, Liverpool and Aston Villa are set to enter discussions over the terms of Elliott’s loan spell in the West Midlands.

The Premier League clubs will negotiate to revise his current arrangement. Liverpool will either be looking increase the appearance target to trigger the purchase obligation, or convert it into an option to buy instead.

Either scenario works much better for Elliott compared to the season he has endured. He made his first appearance since October last month when he played the full 90 minutes against Red Bull Salzburg in the Europa League.

Elliott has since made a substitute appearance in the Premier League against Brentford, so it looks like his chances of re-establishing himself at Aston Villa are on the up, which will be a game-changer for the talented 22-year-old.
