Arsenal are currently top of the Premier League, clear of rivals Man City by six points, and in pole position to win their first league title under Arteta. However, they did suffer an unfortunate injury against Leeds United.
During the 4-0 win, midfielder Mikel Merino suffered a foot injury, which could keep him out for much of the rest of the season. The question is, with less than two hours left before the January deadline, will Arsenal make any signings?
Arteta not ruling out Oxlade-Chamberlain return
Former Arsenal winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has been without a club since he left Turkish side Besiktas in August. Since then, the former Arsenal and Liverpool man has been training with the Gunners’ U21s to keep his fitness up.
Arteta confirmed that Arsenal are pushing to get someone in to replace Merino ahead of the deadline later today, but if they fail, the Gunners could turn to Oxlade-Chamberlain, as it would be an easy deal to complete.
Speaking in his Monday press conference, Arteta was asked about signing the 32-year-old, to which he replied: “We explore every option.
“And it’s our responsibility, when we are playing for what we are playing, to give ourselves the best opportunity and chance to look at the market, every option, evaluate them, and then make a decision whether we do something, if it’s possible. When you lose a big player like this [Merino] in the squad with four months to go and all the competitions to play for, you need to look.”
Oxlade-Chamberlain spent the early part of his career at Arsenal, making several appearances alongside current manager Arteta. He made almost 200 appearances for the Gunners in total, scoring 20 goals, and providing 28 assists.
