Jurgen Klopp dubbed this former Liverpool star an Anfield legend after his efforts for the club
The ex-England international is currently a free agent and has been without a club since he left Besiktas five months ago. His contract was terminated in August 2025, two years on from his move to the Super Lig.
Arteta has now sparked whispers that Oxlade-Chamberlain would be welcomed back at Arsenal, should the opportunity present itself.
Mikel Arteta hints at potential link with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
Arteta has admitted that Arsenal are exploring last-minute options to replace Mikel Merino, who has been ruled out for a significant period of time with a foot injury.
Some reports are suggesting he won’t be back before the end of the season, which has caused the Gunners to scramble for a short-term to fill the gap.
Arteta was asked about the club’s plans to recruit a new midfielder, to which he responded: “We are actively looking at options and we will continue to do that.”
The Arsenal manager was also quizzed on whether the club would open the door to a return for Oxlade-Chamberlain, who is currently training with the club’s U21s team to build up his fitness.
“We explore every option,” Arteta replied, hinting that the idea is not off the table (via Sky Sports).
Jurgen Klopp brands Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain a Liverpool legend
Oxlade-Chamberlain has been linked with a return to the Premier League for a while now. Last month, SportsBoom reported that the 32-year-old is looking to pursue a deal with a side in England’s top flight and he hasn’t been short of interest.
Everton, Fulham and Sunderland have all reportedly been linked with Oxlade-Chamberlain and he has held ‘tentative discussions with a number of clubs’ regarding a potential transfer.
Oxlade-Chamberlain left Liverpool as a free agent in 2023 after winning five trophies, including the historic 2019/20 Premier League title.
The midfielder left the club while Jurgen Klopp was still in charge, and the German coach had a lot of praise for his player before his contract expired ahead of the 2023/24 season.
“Ox is a super guy, an absolutely super guy,” Klopp told the club’s website. One major setback during his time at Liverpool though, was his frequent injury issues. However, that didn’t stop the German from being confident Oxlade-Chamberlain would leave Anfield as a legend.
“Ox won everything here at Liverpool FC, that’s unbelievable, so he will be a legend as well,” the former boss said.
