Liverpool are believed to be poised to secure the signing of defender Jeremy Jacquet
Following a record-breaking summer transfer window, Premier League champions Liverpool have had a quiet January as we approach the final hours of deadline day.
The main focus has been on potential outgoings, with the likes of Andy Robertson and Curtis Jones attracting interest while the future of Aston Villa loanee Harvey Elliott has raised questions – with the player set to stay at Villa Park for the remainder of the season according to reports by Mail Sport.
Interestingly, though, the defender will not officially arrive as a Liverpool player until summer 2026 and will remain in Ligue 1 with his current club for the remainder of the season, as Rennes target a push for Europe. This decision by the Reds has raised questions from fans and pundits, including Sky Sports’ Paul Merson.
‘Majorly shocked’ - Merson reflects on Liverpool’s Jacquet move
Speaking live on Sky Sports News’ Deadline Day broadcast, Merson said of Jacquet’s Liverpool move: “I found it extraordinary that [Jacquet] is coming in the summer. They need a centre-half now to get top four or top five.
"It surprises me. It’s a good signing – as a Chelsea fan I’m shocked he hasn’t come to Chelsea, but I’m glad [Josh] Acheampong is now staying.
“I’m majorly shocked. I don’t know why for the life of me he’s staying in France until the start of next season. With that kind of money, you want him now!"
With Ibrahima Konate recently returning from compassionate leave to partner Virgil van Dijk at the back and Geovanni Leoni out for the season, Liverpool are left short of defensive options at present. When fit, Joe Gomez can fill in across the back line, while Arne Slot has several midfield players who have deputised at right-back for injured duo Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley.
The immediate need for Jacquet may be evident but the two clubs have decided that to remain at Rennes for the rest of the campaign is the right choice for his development, while that clause within a deal may have helped Liverpool get his signing over the line ahead of rival suitors Chelsea.
