Premier League clubs have been busy reshaping their squads ahead of the second half of the season. Manchester City and Tottenham have been the most active among the traditional big six, spending £84m and £48m respectively, with Antoine Semenyo’s £63m move to City set to be the window’s biggest deal.
City’s January spending brings their total outlay over the past 12 months close to £450m. Tottenham (£47.8m) and West Ham (£47m) follow, with West Ham reinforcing their attack to escape the relegation zone.
Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, and Chelsea have largely stayed quiet in the January transfer window, a trend that has persisted in recent years. Arsenal and Liverpool have not made a winter signing for three consecutive seasons, while United’s only January addition over the same period was Patrick Dorgu.
Liverpool have, however, secured a £60m deal to bring French defender Jeremy Jacquet to the club in the summer. Chelsea, after signing Mathis Amougou (£13.5m) last January, have also focused primarily on summer transfers.
Elsewhere in Europe, clubs are also active in the transfer market. Atletico Madrid have signed former Everton star Ademola Lookman from Atalanta, a player previously linked with Liverpool. The Reds were reportedly interested in signing Lookman last summer.
The 28-year-old is versatile, capable of playing as a second striker or on either wing. Lookman began his career in the youth ranks of Waterloo FC and Charlton Athletic, making his senior debut in November 2015.
He later played for Everton, Leipzig, Fulham, and Leicester City before joining Atalanta in 2022. At Atalanta, Lookman became a key attacker, scoring 55 goals and providing 27 assists in 137 appearances.
He played a starring role in Atalanta’s first-ever continental trophy, the 2023/24 UEFA Europa League, scoring all three goals in a 3-0 final win over Bayer Leverkusen.
A club statement read: “Atlético and Atalanta have reached an agreement for the transfer of the Nigerian footballer, who will wear the red-and-white jersey for the next four seasons.”
