Report: Cavaliers looking to trade former No. 2 overall pick ahead of trade deadline

Lonzo Ball's time with the Cleveland Cavaliers appears to be coming to an end ahead of the NBA trade deadline.

After Cleveland traded De'Andre Hunter to the Sacramento Kings over the weekend in exchange for guards Keon Ellis and Dennis Schroder, the Cavs appear to be resetting their guard depth.

This could be due to the fact that Lonzo Ball has been underwhelming after coming over during the offseason.

Cavaliers still looking to salary dump Lonzo Ball's contract ahead of trade deadline

ClutchPoints' Brett Siegel gave an update to the Cavaliers, saying that they "are not done making moves" ahead of the Feb. 5 deadline.

Backup point guard Lonzo Ball is "a focal point of discussions."

With a contract that's paying him $10 million this year and a club option in 2026-27, Ball has seen his minutes slowly fade away as this season has played out.

The 2017 No. 2 overall pick has averaged just 3.0 points per game while shooting just over 31 percent from the field since the start of the new year.

To go along with these trade rumors, the Cavs could be looking to move Max Strus, who hasn't made his season debut after undergoing surgery to address a Jones fracture in his left foot.

Strus, 29, is owed $15.9 million in 2025-26 and $16.6 million in 2026-27.

Cleveland is nearly $14 million over the NBA second apron, so being able to unload Ball, and possibly others would help the Cavaliers clear up some cap space moving forward.
